SECAC (formerly the Southeastern College Art Conference) is a non-profit organization that promotes the study and practice of the visual arts in higher education on a national basis. SECAC facilitates cooperation and fosters on-going dialog about pertinent creative, scholarly and educational issues among teachers and administrators in universities, colleges, community colleges, professional art schools, and museums; and among independent artists and scholars.

On Saturday, October 14, I joined four other presenters during a session entitled Living On Video: Examining Contemporary Frameworks for Time-Based Art Projects, one that I co-chaired with Dr. Jena Seiler of the University of Kentucky.

During this session, I made the presentation, Greatly Exaggerated: Super 8 Film Brings New Life to Art and the Everyday, with the following abstract:

In 1965, Kodak’s Super 8mm movie format brought the capability for home movies to the masses given newly introduced film, cameras, and projectors. Many argue that this film format laid the foundation for amateur filmmaking and set the stage for today’s digital imaging experiences. Considered as an artmaking media that has its own characteristics and history, Super 8 actively frames an artist’s conceptual ideas and spectators’ interpretation of the artwork itself. In this presentation, I will explore the incorporation of Super 8 technology into my art practice, appropriating it as a meaningful part of the conversation about gender identity and sexual orientation expressed within.

During this process, I will discuss how I initially became familiar with Super 8, the process of learning and understanding this format, the everyday art series that I created using the technology, and the ways I displayed the movies I made. I will address some of the challenges I encountered in working with the Super 8 camera, film, and projector, as well as some of the extraordinary lessons I derived about art and personal expression. Quite literally with my application of Super 8, the media maintains an essential relationship with the message.
