Envisioning Creative Resistance at Bowie Center for the Performing Arts

Trapped by Damon Arhos

Envisioning Creative Resistance | Bowie Center for the Performing Arts
Runs: February 1 - March 31, 2020
Opening Reception: 6-9pm on Tuesday, February 11
(Including panel on art & politics from 7-8pm)

To draw attention to a variety of pressing social and political issues in an election year, Bowie State University students, faculty, and staff were asked to submit work reflecting how they envision creative resistance. This exhibition of work will be on display at the Bowie Center for the Performing Arts in February and March 2020.

Trapped offers an attractive dichotomy for each viewer: the rich allure of a lustrous surface versus the intended use for its materials. This metaphor describes the confusion that many LGBTQ Americans feel when confronted both with embrace and disdain. As well, together, these mundane objects form a tower – a symbol of strength and power – in order to confront and contradict discrimination, and to reclaim dignity and pride.

This exhibition is sponsored by a City of Bowie Arts Grant.
