The Antidote (No. 2) by Damon Arhos

I Love To Hate You | IA&A at Hillyer
August 3 – September 2, 2018 in Washington, DC
Opening Reception: 6-9pm on Friday, August 3
Artist Talk: 6:30-8pm on Wednesday, August 8

What does it mean to concurrently love and hate something? To experience physical and emotional attraction and repulsion at the same time? How is it confusing to be affirmed and reviled? This disorienting state of affairs embodies the artworks in this exhibition: The Antidote, Yesterday’s 30,and Trapped.

A series of seven paintings, The Antidote accentuates the unjust stigma and shame that those who are infected with HIV or who may take Truvada as a preventative experience. The Super 8 motion picture film Yesterday’s 30 mourns the tragic loss of 30 transgender people in the United States in 2017. The tower Trapped, constructed of hardware-assembled rat traps enhanced with metallic paint, offers an attractive dichotomy for each viewer: the rich allure of a lustrous surface versus the intended use for its materials. This metaphor describes the confusion that many LGBTQ Americans feel when confronted both with embrace and disdain.
