Residency at VCCA Moulin à Nef in Auvillar, France

Residency | VCCA Moulin à Nef in Auvillar, France
July 2024

This summer, I spent nearly three weeks in residence at VCCA (Virginia Center for the Creative Arts) Moulin à Nef on the Garonne River in Auvillar, France. While in residence, I created more than 15 new artworks that included French textual references from L'Enfer de Dante (Dante’s Inferno) in my private studio.

For Fellows who have had a residency at Mt. San Angelo in Virginia, VCCA offers the opportunity to apply for residencies at le Moulin à Nef. (I was a resident in Virginia in November-December 2022.) Located on the famous pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, Auvillar has been designated one of the most beautiful villages in France. It is in the Port section of town, just below the main village.

While a VCCA Moulin à Nef fellow, I also traveled to the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec in Albi, the cave drawings at Lascaux and Rouffignac, and the Festival of Cultures aux Coeurs at Montignac. These experiences were incredibly rewarding, offering inspiration for new ways to share art with my students at the Kentucky College of Art + Design.
